KILGOROUND
BILL WOODALL

SOMETHING new and completely unexpected from a food distribution company: fiddlehead ferns.

MARX Foods swears that fiddlehead fern has a mild flavor and a nutty bite. We don't know exactly what that means, but we're assured they can be sautéed, stir fried or steamed.

THE company also offers, for those whose salad tastes are more exotic than ours, stinging nettles.

NEXT Saturday is Kilgore's clean-up day. It comes about a week after the Texas Trash-Off, but that certainly doesn't detract from its importance.

KILGORE Improvement and Beautification Association is hoping that you, your family and every organization of which you're a member will participate in helping to clean up the community.

ORGANIZERS are calling the event Make Kilgore Shine and they're asking participants to pick up litter and to clean up

weeds around buildings and sidewalks. (No, Mitch, we don't think they expect to do anything about the trucksized hole in the pavement in front of BlockBuster.)

TO PROVE that you helped, you'll need a tee shirt. And to get that, you must register IN ADVANCE by calling 983- 1379. But you can't just take the shirt and disappear; KIBA volunteers will give you a street or streets to work and same bags to hold your trash.

TEAMS check in at 8 a.m. at Kilgore City Park.

LET'S get on it.
