First place is usually a good place to be. The Sabine High School softball team is in first place now in District 15-3A, and they're all alone there. The Lady Cardinals, coached by Sarah Ricks- Creech, beat Mineola 12-3 at Mineola on Friday night, moving to the top of the 15-3A leaderboard.

The Lady Cards are 8-9 overall this season, and 3-0 in district play. They've got two more games left in the first round of district: they are at home Tuesday night against Spring Hill (5:30 p.m. junior varsi- ty start) and visit Gladewater on Friday (same time). Then the second round of district competition begins April 1 against White Oak.

At Mineola Friday, Sabine scored five runs in the third inning and never looked back, belting out 19 hits in the contest. Cassie Headley and Sandy James each went 3-for-5 - both of them had three singles. Headley scored twice, James once, and James had 2 RBI.

Jannell DeFreece went 2-for-4, both singles with 4 RBI. Cortnee Ryan and Shayla Gossett also each went 2-for-4 - Ryan scored twice and had an RBI, and Gossett scored once, and also had an RBI. Lindsey Bryce went 2-for-3; Chelsea Headley went 2-for-5, with 2 RBI; Alex Easley went 2-for-5 with an RBI; and Hayley Hayes went 1-for-4, and also had an RBI.

On the mound, James picked up her eighth win of the year (she's 8-7). She pitched all seven innings, struck out six, walked no one and allowed just three hits.

Sabine committed five errors in the game, but Mineola committed six.
