Boys and Girls Club offers recreation during spring break

Kids from Kilgore were taking advantage of the Boys and Girls Club being open for spring break. Trey Tinney (left), 11, a Kilgore Intermediate School student plays some bumper pool while Mikayla Thomas, 10, also a student a Kilgore Intermediate plays some air hockey.
The Kilgore Boys and Girls Club is progressing a little bit more every day.

David Stewie, unit director for the Kilgore Boys and Girls Club, said the organization is keeping its collective fingers crossed, but they hope the club will be open on Saturdays starting next year.

Now the club is offering only Monday through Friday hours from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. with no word yet on summer hours.

Stewie said the computer lab should be up and running by the end of April.

Also, there are improvements planned for the exterior of the facility with an expansion of the pad for a new basketball court in the works, according to Stewie.

Stewie said the club averages about 70 kids per day during the school week and even though the club put out the word that they would be open this week, attendance is a little slow during this week of spring break.

"We are open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. for spring break," said Stewie.

For now, Stewie is the only full time employee for the Kilgore club.
