The Pleasant Grove Invitational, a high school boys golf tournament played over the weekend at Hank Haney's Texarkana Golf Ranch, turned out to be a good proving ground for the Kilgore High School boys golf team, KHS head coach Jimmy Williams said.

The Bulldogs finished the tournament - one team of a 16-team field - in a tie for eighth place with future district opponent Pine Tree High School.

"It was the best field we've faced this year, and the kids did a good job," Williams graded.

Cameron Clower shot a two-over 74 on the last day that helped the Bulldogs leap from 10th place to the eighth-place finish. Clower finished with a two-day 156.

"He really played solid," Williams said. "This was Cameron's career low in competition."

Zack Mays had a 159 over two days for KHS. Chance Fitch shot a 166, Jacob Patterson a 170, and Zach Zimmerman a 182.

Kilgore totaled a 651 in the event, as did Pine Tree. Seventh-place host-team Pleasant Grove finished with a 633.

Other teams in the tournament that are in Kilgore's district are Hallsville and Marshall, and those teams finished 12th (Hallsville shot a 686) and 16th (Marshall shot a 738).

The tournament medalist was Drew Dorsey, a player for Edmond (Okla.) High School. Dorsey shot a 146 over the two-day tournament.
