Seniors learn about "Boom"

The Kilgore Senior Citizens met Wednesday, February 27 in the Lions building at 207 N. Rusk Street. President Betty Roebuck called the meeting to order at 11:30. David Parker led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and Juanita Riley gave the opening prayer.

Our program was given by Sue Brown, a member of the Kilgore Historical and Preservation Board. She told us about the play, "Boom," that will be presented in the Kilgore High School Auditorium, Friday March 7 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, March 8 at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. "Boom" is the story of the discovery of oil in East Texas in 1931. It tells of all the massive problems that occurred in and around East Texas -- mud roads, board sidewalks, oilmen everywhere. And in no time, there were 62 derricks crowded within the boundaries of Kilgore. The play was written by Lottie Lipscomb Guttry, who has spend her entire life in East Texas. There are 25 members in the cast. The play is directed by Liz Hedges.

There were four visitors with us -

Sue Brown, Rene Tatum, and Roger and Salita Tucker. They joined thirty-nine members at our covered-dish luncheon.

We sang Happy Birthday to Dorothea Faulkner. The secretary's report was read and approved as corrected. The treasurer's report was given and approved as read. The Sunshine Lady gave her report: Thelma Guess has passed away. Six birthday cards were sent. Get well cards were sent to Cetrue Lenihan, Francis Lenning, Pauline Davis and Helen Fette. A motion was made by Flo Francis and seconded by Margie Anglin that we send a $25 donation to the Highland Park Baptist Church in memory of Thelma Guess. Motion passed.

President Betty suggested we bring any old eyeglasses to our next meeting to be given to the Lions Club for their project of Eye Glasses For The Needy. Joyce Riddle asked if anyone could give her the names of the people that are in a picture she has that was taken of the Seniors Club about ten years ago. She also told us that Leigh Ware has passed away.

Door prizes were won by Ruth Gleaton and Mildred Grimes. President Betty dismissed us with prayer at 1:15.
