Melanie Sullivan, music instructor and opera workshop teacher said KC tries to have at least one Master Class per semester. "This gives students the opportunity to have someone from the outside, either a teacher or music professional, give them guidance and instruction on their individual performances," said Sullivan. Rebecca Grimes and Eva Budnick were the guest instructors. These two are co-owners of Opera del West in Boston, Mass. Grimes is a native of Kilgore and has family in the Kilgore area. Performing were K'leigh Shorey, a sophomore at KC singing soprano and Jon Starling, a tenor and a freshman at KC. Both students are music majors. Shorey performed Achichsühls by Mozart and Starling performed Una Furtiva Lagrima by Donizetti. Grimes instructed Shorey on breathing and other voice techniques while Budnick talked about dialogue. The opera workshop class was present to hear and see the presentation and instruction by these two professionals. Sullivan said the Master Class, private voice lessons and their regular classes are preparing these students for the annual spring recital. "This recital will feature solo numbers of classical origin as well as duets involving musical theater," said Sullivan. Students receive private voice lesson from Sullivan, Jeanne Johnson, department chair and instructor of music and dance at KC and Ryan Kelly, music and chorale instructor. "Students must learn not only the piece, but if it is in Italian, French or German they must learn the language for that piece and know what it means when they sing it," said Sullivan. In the spring recital, there will be 11 students performing and the concert is free to the public. |
