KHS track team at G'water Thursday There's been three track & field meets so far this season for the Kilgore High School track team, and so far, so good, the team's coaches say. The fourth meet of the season for KHS will be tomorrow, a rare Thursday meet, at Gladewater High School. Field events will begin at 3:30 p.m.; the 3200 meter run will begin at 4, and the finals in the running events will begin at 6:30. The team comes off a decent performance in Marshall last weekend - both the boys and girls finished fifth. Coach Phillip Lane's boys scored 53 points. The girls' head coach is Kerry Strong, but they were coached Saturday by Davia Garrett. They finished with 63. • Girls: Tai'Shea Reese, a state qualifier last year in the long jump for KHS, showed good form Saturday in Marshall, winning that event with a jump of 18 feet, 6 1/2 inches, far better than the second-place finisher (who had a jump of almost a foot less - 17 feet, 10 inches). Reese also won the 100 meter dash, running it in 12.61 seconds - two hundreths of a second better than the secondplace finisher. Samone Jones did well again in the shot put, winning the event with a throw of 33 feet, 10 inches, and that was almost two feet better than second place. Once again, the relay team of Reese, Brandi Johnson, Jessica Shepherd, and Shae Morgan in the 800 meter relay did well, finishing second (1 minute, 46.87 seconds), less than a second behind the winning team from Longview High. The team of Yamika Smith, Andrea Ashley, Johnson and Morgan finished fifth in the 1600 meter relay in the time of 4 minutes, 29.90 seconds. Andrea Ashley finished sixth in the high jump for the Bulldogs (4 feet, 10 inches), and the 400 meter relay team finished third (50.04 seconds). • Boys: In field events, Dominique Jones finished third in the shot put (44 feet, 1 inch), and Colby Rosen was fourth in the discus (127 feet). Shaun Edwards finished second in the high jump (6 feet, 6 inches), losing by just two inches to the defending state champion from Atlanta High, who jumped 6-8. Joe Colbert was fourth (5 feet, 10 inches) in that event. In the 100 meter dash, Colbert was second (10.89 seconds) - Ladarius Jones of Marshall ran 10.87. In the triple jump, Edwards was fifth (41 feet, 10 1/2 inches). Teammate Kendrix Tillman was sixth (41 feet, 4 inches). Tillman was fourth in the 400 meter dash. In the 400 meter relay, the team of Steven Smith, Robert Morgan, Matt Goff, and Colbert finished third for KHS (a time of 44.35 seconds). Shadow Stokes was fourth in the discus. In the junior varsity 800 meter run, Ty Midkiff is improving every time out, coach Lane said. Josh Medford ran better in the 100 meter, Lane said, and he said that Tracy Austin is doing better in the hurdles. The coach said Devaron Harvey is improving week to week in the 200, and also is doing well running on JV relay teams. |
