By MITCH LUCAS sports@kilgorenewsherald.com

BIG WIN FOR COMPTON - Kilgore's Trevar Compton (above) won the Texas Eastman tournament's boys singles competition over the weekend.
Trevar Compton used his weekend off from tennis to - well, play tennis, and won the boys singles portion of the Eastman High School Tennis Tournament Saturday in Longview.

Compton, whose Kilgore High School team had an open date last weekend, had a first-round bye. He beat Whitehouse's Richard Corbyn, 3-6, 6-4, 10-7 in the second round, and then beat Gladewater's Jason Holt, 6-3, 6-3, in the third round. In the semifinals, Compton beat Jared Crumpler of Pine Tree, 6-0, 6-1, and was beating Don Krenek of Hallsville, 2-1, when Krenek had to abandon his attempt at the crown due to an injury. There were players from 12 schools in the tournament, with just over 200 total players.

Compton and the Bulldogs will be back in action this weekend, finally getting to play on their home courts for the first time this spring. KHS, coached by Jason Maroney, hosts their own tournament on Friday, which also will include players from Gilmer, Gladewater, Pine Tree, White Oak, Whitehouse, Spring Hill, Commerce, Hallsville, Quitman, and Trinity.
