KHS loses district opener at Henderson The trip to Henderson for the District 12-4A softball opener had been scheduled for Monday, finally got played on Wednesday, and didn't wind up going too well for the Kilgore High School Lady Bulldogs. KHS dropped the game to Henderson, 9- 1. The Lady Bulldogs, coached by Cassie Newell, host Marshall on Friday, provided the weather cooperates. Local weather forecasters have called for very cold temperatures, rain and possibly even a wintery mix. The games with Marshall are scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. with the junior varsity, with varsity to follow. Against Henderson on Wednesday, the Lady 'Dogs (4-9 overall, 0-1 in 12-4A play) trailed early, giving up a run in the first inning. The Lady Lions scored in the first and third innings - it was 5-1 after four. Kilgore managed a run in the fourth inning, but Henderson added four runs in the sixth to take a commanding lead. Henderson pitchers notched 16 strikeouts of Kilgore batters. Pitcher Meagan Youngblood went 2-for-3 for KHS (and had three strikeouts on the mound). Jalissa Baggett had a double. Brianna Sanders also had a double, and Whitney Brown had a single. The Lady Bulldogs committed three errors in the game. "We just came out flat," Newell said, and didn't really get anything going offensively until the end, when we had the bulk of our hits. ...We went three-up, threedown in the first three innings. After that, we had base-runners, but we just couldn't get them across the plate." KHS has played only one game at home this year, and after tomorrow evening's games against Marshall, it's back on the road again - at Whitehouse on Tuesday, and at Nacogdoches on Friday. |
