City streetscape focus of meeting Downtown streetscape is a popular subject lately, but no more popular at any roundtable than that of to the Main Street Advisory Board and Main Street Design Committee. The next scheduled meeting of Main Street Advisory Board hosts Shelly Potter of Longview's Shelly Potter Architecture and Mike Burns, of KSA Engineering, to discuss the city streetscape project. Potter and Burns have both worked extensively in Kilgore on a number of projects for the city as well as on Kilgore Historical Preservation Foundation projects. Board members are expected to discuss what aspect they would like to see stay, as well as some they would like changed in the process of the project. The board will also be asked to set a date for another public forum to further discuss downtown plans with Kilgore residents. Main Street Design Committee has recommended that the Advisory Board approve several applications. The design committee approved design plans submitted by Harry Crouse, owner of the building at 110 N. Kilgore St., approving him for $10,000 toward improvements to the old Longhorn Drug building. Crouse plans to repair and repaint the plaster, hand paint the brick on the bottom story, paint the stone on the bottom story and add a balcony to the upper level. Greg Thurman, owner of Nardis, Inc., at 500 E. Main Street also submitted an application. The Design Committee has awarded him $8,282.50. Thurman plans to repair and repaint the plaster on the entire building, enclose his display window with glass blocks and replace his yard sign. Mike and Jennifer Brown, owners of High Maintenance Spalon, in Old City Hall at 325 N. Kilgore Street were also approved for funds from the committee. The Browns plan to use the old "Furniture and Tires" sign that came with the building to promote the spalon. In other business the board will discuss sharing the cost of a full-page ad in an informational magazine, Destination: East Texas - to be distributed at the I-20 Texas Welcome Center as well as distributed at area motels and chambers of commerce. Main Street Advisory Board meets 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 4 at Kilgore City Hall in Council Chambers. |
