Main Street wants to amend city sign ordinance
By KATHRYN MARTINEZ news1@kilgorenewsherald.com

Since the inception of the Main Street program in Kilgore many have expressed feelings of dis-satisfaction and non-accomplishment, but a luncheon for building owners to meet each other and board members, earlier this week, found that spirits have changed since several grants have been made and one Commerce Street building has been completed.

"we had a great meeting," Fallon Burns, Main Street manager, said.

The main purpose of the meeting was for building owners to network as well as hear some ideas set to spring forth from the board of directors and design committee.

According to Burns, the next phase in downtown revitalization is amending the city sign ordinance.

Building owners and merchants are also interested in removing old benches and purchasing new benches, that are more cohesive to the downtown environment; and replacing and planting the sidewalk planters.

"Everyone at the luncheon was receptive to ideas and optimistic about the future of downtown," Burns said.

In other Main Street business, Burns the design committee approved a $10,000 façade grant, for use toward renovations on the old Longhorn Drug façade; $425 for High Maintenance Spalon to refurbish the old Furniture and Tires sign , for use at the new business; and $8,252 toward painting and glass block work on Nardis, Inc.
