LOCAL SPORTS IN BRIEF Kilgore teams face Marshall tonight In their efforts to get back into the District 17-4A playoff hunt, both Kilgore High School soccer teams will face Marshall tonight. The Bulldogs, coached by Kris Duplissey and Joey Pippen, are seeking their third win in four games tonight, and they'll be here at R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium hosting the Mavericks. The top three teams in each district make the playoffs, and right now, Marshall is in that third-place spot - Kilgore is in fourth. The night begins at 5:30 p.m., though, with the junior varsity game. Pippen's JV has played lights-out: the JV Bulldogs are 10-1 on the season. Coach Amanda Walzel's Lady Bulldogs will play at Marshall, beginning at 5:30 p.m. with the JV (coached by Alice Crocker). KHS comes off a tough 1-0 loss to Lindale, but is still very much alive for a playoff spot in the district, currently in fifth place. On Friday night, both Kilgore teams have open dates, and then will face Pine Tree on Tuesday. The girls will be home, the boys at PT. SOFTBALL KHS at Eustace; Sabine hosts Henderson For the first time in a week, the Kilgore High School softball team will take the field tonight, a road game at Eustace. Kilgore's Lady Bulldogs (1-5) play at Eustace today, beginning with the junior varsity at 5 p.m. Kilgore comes off a win at Mineola last Tuesday, its first win of the season. This weekend, Kilgore will play in the White Oak Tournament. KHS will face Eustace, believe it or not, on Thursday morning at 10, and then turn around and face Van at noon. Kilgore will be in action again on Friday morning at 10 a.m. against an opponent to be determined, and then face New Diana at 2. On Saturday, the Lady Bulldogs are scheduled to finish the tournament against Spring Hill, a 1:30 p.m. start. The Sabine Lady Cardinals played in a tournament in Henderson over the weekend, and ironically, Sabine hosts Henderson tonight, beginning at 4:30 with the JV teams. Coach Sarah Ricks-Creech's team will play in the Lear Park Tournament in Longview this weekend. The Lady Cardinals split on Saturday, losing to Gilmer 5-3, then beating Henderson, 1-0. Against Gilmer, Sabine (3-3 this season to date) gave up five first-inning runs. The Lady Cards scored three in the third inning, but could get no closer. Hailey Hayes took the loss for Sabine, allowing three hits. Sandy James came in in relief, striking out six and allowing one hit. At the plate, James had a double, scored a run and had an RBI. Cassie Headley scored a run and had a single. Kendra Whitehead and Shayla Gossett each had a single. In the win over Henderson, Sabine scored what would be the only run of the game in the second inning. The Lady Cardinals won in spite of committing two errors, but played good defense otherwise - Henderson managed just two hits. James had the lone run of the contest, a second-inning home run. Cortnee Ryan had a single, which was the only other hit in the game for Sabine. James was named to the all-tournament team for her efforts. |
