KHS boys finish third in Brook Hill tourney
HIGH SCHOOL GOLF
By MITCH LUCAS sports@kilgorenewsherald.com

Kilgore High School's boys golf team is climbing the ladder, and the climb is going just fine so far.

The Bulldogs finished third on Monday in the Brook Hill Invitational at Eagles Bluff Country Club, a par-71 course.

What makes the third-place finish even more special is that KHS did it in a 28-team field.

"The kids really played well," coach Jimmy Williams said. "Those were tough course tough conditions with the wind."

Lindale and Grace finished tied for first with a 312, and Kilgore finished just three shots back (a 315). Lufkin was fourth with a 316, then Nacogdoches and Tyler Lee (317 each) in a tie for fifth, Canton with a 320, All-Saints with a 336, the host team, Brook Hill, with a 341, and Van rounding out the top 10 with a 342.

Kilgore's Chance Fitch had a nice round, finishing in a tie for sixth overall in the 138-player field. He shot a 75. Zack Mays finished with a 78 (tied for 15th). Jacob Patterson shot an 80 (tied for 18th), Cameron Clower an 82 (tied for 24th) and Zach Zimmerman a 93.

"Chance really had a solid round," Williams said. "That was his best outing of the spring. Zack Mays has struggled some this spring, but played really well, and we hope he's back on track.

"Cameron played solid again, and his score is not indicative of how good he played. Jacob has really made some strides - he is our most improved player since last year. He has been a solid three-man all year, getting better each time out. We've played well against district (12-4A) teams. It should be a dogfight going into the last part of the season."

The KHS girls golfers were to play today in the girls' portion of the Brook Hill Invitational - they are also coached by Williams.

The Bulldogs' next tournament is the Pleasant Grove Invitational at Texarkana Golf Ranch.
