Radio time at the Lions
By KATHRYN MARTINEZ news1@kilgorenewsherald.com

CHUCK CONRAD
Kilgore Lions Club last week heard all about the radio business at KZQX.

Chuck Conrad, station owner, said getting the station up and running has been an eightyear adventure.

Conrad returned to his East Texas roots after spending most of his career in Dallas doing live sound productions. Returning here he opened up the old weather station at Chalk Hill as a low-power FM station.

KZQX operates at three locations on the FM band, serving Kilgore, Longview and Tyler.

"The music we stream is like nothing else you have ever heard," Conrad said. "Technology is a great thing."

Conrad said that KZQX has a music library of more than 8,000 songs.

According to Conrad KZQX is a non-profit station and operates on donations and sponsors with a volunteer staff.

"Kilgore has been very supportive of this endeavor," Conrad said.

Among Kilgore's supporters is Manny Almanza, the voice of Kilgore College football, who broadcasts the play-by-play of Kilgore's collegiate home team on 105.1 FM

Conrad said the station is always looking for volunteers, sponsors and submitted announcements.

"Everything is programmed here," Conrad said. "Nothing is satellite-delivered."
