KHS boosters meet Monday
The Kilgore High School soccer booster club will meet Monday at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will be held at the brand new boys soccer field House at the KHS campus. Topics of discussion include senior night plans and the upcoming soccer banquet.
BASEBALL
'Dogs win scrimmage; open Monday
The Kilgore High School baseball team beat Carthage, 7-0, Friday at Driller Park in the last scrimmage before the regular season begins.
The season is here - the Diamond 'Dogs open Monday at Wills Point, a 6 p.m. start (the junior varsity will play at home at Driller at 6 p.m. against Tyler Lee).
Kilgore won't play a meaningful District 12-4A game for some time - the 'Dogs open the district schedule at Whitehouse on March 11. But, weather-permitting, they should have played plenty of games before then. Kilgore is scheduled to play in three tournaments: the Rose City Classic (this weekend, beginning Thursday), the Oil Belt Tournament here at Driller Park (Feb. 28 through March 1), and the North Lamar tournament in Paris (March 6 through March 8).
KHS opens this weekend's RCC on Thursday at University of Texas at Tyler Field at 11 a.m. against Rockwall. The Bulldogs will face Greenville at Mike Carter Field in Tyler on Friday at 3:30, then turn around and play Shreveport Byrd Friday night at 8.
The Bulldogs will wrap up the tournament Saturday morning at 10 a.m. against Haughton.
Kilgore baseball is coached by Jeff Blackstone, Ronnie Lee Garvin and Ronnie Hendrix. The Bulldogs have quite a good talent base coming back from their playoff team last year, which made it to the second round of the UIL Class 4A postseason.
KBBA registration continues
Sign up for the 2008 season of the Kilgore Boys Baseball Association (KBBA) resumes Friday from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m., and continues Saturday at that same time period at the KBBA complex on Harris Street.
Registration is $75 per player. Children must be five years old before April 30, and should bring birth certificates to registration. Ages range from five through 14.
Tryouts will also be at the KBBA Harris Street complex on March 1, the time to be announced.
For more information on KBBA, call the KBBA office at (903) 984-4170, or contact them by e-mail (write to Stephanie Osteen) at kilgorebaseball@yahoo.com.
SOFTBALL
KYSA sign-up starts Saturday
Registration for the spring season of the Kilgore Youth Softball Association (KYSA) will begin Saturday, and will be held several days throughout the first portion of March.
Registration will be held at the sports complex on Highway 135 (that's also where games are played) at the red building. There is a registration fee of $75 per player, with discounts after registering two players from the same household.
The first registration day is this Saturday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at the sports complex. There are two more Saturday registration days: March 1 and March 8, both from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.
There are also a pair of mid-week registration days: Tuesday, Feb. 26 (from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m.) and Tuesday, March 4 (from 4 p.m. until 6).
There will be no late registration this year.
For more information on KYSA, contact Evelyn Stokes at (903) 984-8704, or see the KYSA website at kysakilgore.org.
BASKETBALL
KC teams at home twice this week
Both Kilgore College basketball teams are still hoping to make the Region XIV Conference tournament, and they'll be home twice during the course of this week.
Coach Roy Thomas' Lady Rangers and Coach Scott Schumacher's Runnin' Rangers will host a doubleheader with Jacksonville College on Wednesday night, beginning with the ladies game at 5:30 p.m., and will host another doubleheader Saturday against Tyler Junior College, a 2 p.m. ladies-game tipoff.
Opportunities to make the conference tournaments are passing quickly - the Runnin' Rangers have five games left in the season, and the ladies, four. The KC teams were to play at San Jacinto on Saturday, but following the deadline of this edition of the News Herald. See an update on the KC teams in Tuesday's News Herald sports section.
GOLF
ACS golf-a-thon March 8
Here at Meadowbrook Country Club on Saturday, March 8, there will be a golf-athon to benefit the American Cancer Society, and when I say golf-a-thon, I mean it: participants will play 54 holes of best ball, with a triple bogey maximum on any hole played.
To enter, you provide a minimum donation of $500 to the American Cancer Society.
For the donation, your food and drink for the day will be provided, you'll get a Nike Dri-Fit shirt, your cart and green fees are included in that donation, and dinner and drinks at the end of the day.
Cash prizes for the low nine, the low 18, the low 36 and the low 54, based on handicap, will be given.
To enter, you'll need to call Greg Collins at (903) 988-3413 by Friday, Feb. 15. Be prepared to let Greg know a shirt size and if you'll need a cart.
TRACK
KHS starts season Thursday
The Kilgore High School track & field team will start the 2008 campaign on Thursday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. at Pine Tree High School in the annual Graham Knowles Relays.
The girls track team is coached by Kerry Strong, in his first year, and the boys are coached once again by Phillip Lane.
After Thursday's opener at Pine Tree, the KHS track squad won't be in action again until March 1 at Hallsville.
TENNIS
JV at home Tuesday
Kilgore High School's junior varsity team will be at home on Tuesday against Winona, and the varsity is scheduled to compete in a tournament at Corsicana on Friday. The varsity team was also slated to compete in Coppell's tournament this weekend, although it is likely the inclement weather forced either a reshuffling of that event, or its cancellation altogether.
KHS tennis is coached by Jason Maroney.
