Meadowbrook Country Club welcomed the Kilgore Rotary Club back to its ballroom on Wednesday, and the 2008 RYLA leadership students were the program for the club's first meeting back at the historic country club.
Students Dustin Dubose and Alyssa McKinney of Kilgore joined Sabine students Meagan Goins, Hillarie Clarke and Jackson Lane at RYLA this year. This weekend brings future leaders together at Camp Pirtle for a series of challenges and leadership training. All but Lane were able to come to the Wednesday meeting. He was absent due to a state competition for which he qualified.
The students each took several minutes to tell their favorite things about the weekend. And, all of them said it was something that really benefited them. They also said they made instant friends that they would keep for a long time due to the challenges and leadership training they all received together.
All of the students were glad they attended the training, and all of them said the 50-foot pole they had to climb as one of the challenges was definitely the toughest thing. Only a couple of them made it to the platform and could stand up. The others fell off before they could get to that point.
They all said that being in different groups with people they had never met before was scary at first but was a great thing later on because of the bonding process that occurred. People were able to lean on each other and not judge each other if they failed a challenge.
The campers all said it was something they would do again.
In other Rotary news, the flags were put out this weekend for President's Day. They will be out through Monday.
The Foundation Dinner is this weekend in Texarkana. Several from Kilgore will be attending.
This week, Rufus Lovett from Kilgore College will be the program.
The Kilgore Rotary Club meets each Wednesday at noon in the Meadowbrook Country Club. Guests are always welcome.
