Sabine girls out; boys have big night At press time this morning, there wasn't much information available on the Sabine High School Lady Cardinals' UIL Class 3A playoff game against Pittsburg Tuesday night in Daingerfield. The Lady Cardinals did lose to Pittsburg, 49-32, at Daingerfield High School, finishing their season at 18-12. Sabine made the playoffs for the second straight year under coach Bell, whose team shared the District 15-3A title with Spring Hill - Sabine and Spring Hill both finished 9-1 in district play, and Spring Hill won a game between the two after the regular season that earned the Lady Panthers a first-round bye. The Sabine varsity boys haven't yet begun their playoff run, however, and had some big things happen on Tuesday night. The Cardinals, coached by Tim Davis, finished out the regular season in style Tuesday with an impressive 63-23 road victory over Mineola, the regular-season finale for both teams. The Cards also moved into a tie for second place in 15-3A with the Gilmer Buckeyes, after both teams finish their district schedule with a record of 7-3. Gilmer fell to White Oak on Tuesday, setting up a single-game playoff between the Buckeyes and the Cardinals to determine the second place seeding for the district going into the postseason. Sabine got 18 points from sophomore Noah Jackson, including two three-pointers. Glen Hutchison also found a rhythm, scoring 15 points. Jacob Kenna followed with eight points, Willie Mumphrey added six, Colton Kirk five. Jake Taylor and Tyler Woodrell each scored four points, and Joshua Montana had two. Jamal Meankins led Mineola with nine points in the game. The game was actually decided in the first quarter, where Sabine jumped ahead 23-0 at the end of one. The Cardinals led 32-12 at halftime and 52-14 at the end of the third quarter. Sabine finished the regular season with a record of 27-6. Sabine's playoff game versus Gilmer has yet to be determined, as well as their first round playoff opponent. See the News Herald's sports section Thursday for that information. • Sabine 57, Mineola 11 (JV): The Sabine junior varsity boys also played well, earning a 57-11 victory against the Yellowjackets. With the win, the JV squad finishes the season as district champs. Hunter Powdrill led the Cards with 12 points. Josh Montana put in 11, Zach Royce eight, Chance Haskins seven, Terrence Daniels and Marc Cunningham both added four, and Phadarian Harper and Jerrel Chumley scored two each. The team finishes the season with an overall record of 20-4 and an 8-2 record in district. |
