Murphy's Law - "Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong at the worst possible moment" - was in place Monday afternoon at StreamFlo Field, for the Kilgore High School Lady Bulldogs' softball opener against White Oak.
Kilgore committed 13 errors, some of them leading to a big lead early for the Lady Roughnecks, who eventually wrapped up a 21-9 win.
Coach Cassie Newell's Lady Bulldogs (0-1) will play in the Lufkin Hudson tournament this weekend, beginning Thursday morning.
Against White Oak on Monday night, KHS shortstop Summer Williams, who had suffered a concussion some time ago, was cleared to play, and then collided with third baseman Ashley Sanders on a pop fly. Sanders was banged up and didn't return. WIlliams was able to return, and had a double. Brittany Sanders and Brittany Gary also each had a single, as did catcher Alyssa McKinney.
A pair of freshmen did well at the plate. Jalissa Baggett had a single, and Skye Wyatt had a single and a double.
White Oak, though, jumped on Kilgore early, taking a 5-1 lead after the first inning, and a 10-1 lead after two. Kilgore rallied and cut the lead to 16-9 after the fourth inning, but White Oak scored five more runs to put the game out of reach.
Kilgore meets Kirbyville first in the Lufkin Hudson tournament, a pool-play tournament for the first two days. The Bulldogs will face the host team, Hudson, on Thursday night at 6:30, and then play twice more on Friday, beginning at 9:45 a.m. against Corrigan.
