Savony gets first UT homer
The former Kilgore High School softball standout, now suiting up for the University of Texas, had a big impact on the Longhorns' season-opening series against the University of Texas-San Antonio over the weekend in Austin. Savony had an off-the-wall double against UTSA on Saturday, helping Texas to a X-X win, but the real fireworks from the former Kilgore Bulldog came on Sunday: her first collegiate home run. It was a three-run shot, in the third inning, scoring first baseman Brittany Barnhill and second baseman Kelly Malone, and gave UT a 7-2 lead. UTSA would not recover. UT and UTSA split the first day, with Texas winning its season opener, then losing the second game, 3-2. Sunday's win gives Texas a 2- 1 record on the young season. Through three games played, Savony is batting .600 in five at-bats. She's gone 2-for-3 (the double and the homer), and has 3 RBI. She's got a slugging percentage of 1.400, and an onbase percentage of .600. Savony and the Longhorns will be back in action Wednesday at 6 p.m. in San Marcos to face Texas State. Savony is just one of several former Kilgore High School and Kilgore-area athletes now in the college or professional ranks. Anyone with new information on one of these athletes can call Kilgore News Herald sports editor Mitch Lucas at 903) 984-2593, or e-mail at sports@kilgorenewsherald.com, because we'd certainly like any update possible. |
