KILGOROUND
MITCH LUCAS
IF YOU HAVE a favorite presidential candidate headed into today's Super Tuesday elections across the country, well, good luck - I don't. I have no real favoritism to any of the candidates in the race, and quite a bit of negativity about a lot of them. For those of you who don't know, I was a political science major in college, so I follow politics closely. And I will be following this tonight, particularly after I get the children to bed. But for the first time since I was a 14-yearold kid in 1984, I don't have a dog in the hunt, so to speak. Sen. John McCain (RAriz.) is far too liberal for me, and none of the other Republicans stand out. Unlike a lot of people, I WOULD vote for Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) for dog catcher - I'd like to see that. But I wouldn't vote for her for high public office. I do think the Clinton-Barack Obama race is interesting, and I don't think we'll see a clear-cut winner tonight. At press time, as I write this, one of the many polls taken has Obama up by 13 points in California. That kind of a win over Clinton in California would be telling. I'm thinking that, on the Republican side, if McCain has a big night, Mike Huckabee will have to pull out of the race (he's been running third since winning Iowa) and it would be a big blow to Mitt Romney. At any rate, it'll all shake down before midnight, and I'll be following. +++ IF YOU'RE THE KIND of person who's swayed on whom to vote for based on the endorsement of any given celebrity (and if you are, maybe you need to put a little more thought into it), then you might want to know that George Clooney has now endorsed Obama. That endorsement and 50 cents will buy you that proverbial cup of coffee. +++ HOW ABOUT A little golf for a worthy cause? Here at Meadowbrook Country Club on Saturday, March 8, there will be a golfa thon to benefit the American Cancer Society, and when I say golf-a-thon, I mean it: participants will play 54 holes of best ball, with a triple bogey maximum on any hole played. To enter, you provide a minimum donation of $500 to the American Cancer Society. For the donation, your food and drink for the day will be provided, you'll get a Nike Dri-Fit shirt, your cart and green fees are included in that donation, and dinner and drinks at the end of the day. Cash prizes for the low nine, the low 18, the low 36 and the low 54, based on handicap, will be given. To enter, you'll need to call Greg Collins at (903) 988- 3413 by Friday, Feb. 15. Be prepared to let Greg know a shirt size and if you'll need a cart. +++ YOU MAY CHECK our sports section today to find out more about what's going on in local sports this week. The only sports team in town tonight is the Kilgore High School boys basketball program, hosting Hallsville. +++ HAPPY BIRTHDAY TODAY to Chris Toler, Patsy Bradley, Todd Cooper, Etta Lois Kennedy, Justin Michell Stevens, Benjamin McKnight, Birchell Davis, Roy Matney, Charles Thomas Nix, Sr., Wanda Bittick, LaRue Wood, Mitch Autrey, Matthew Lee, Nicholas Little, Tresha Clary, Marie Farrar, Hali Ann Tackett, Makayla Perry.
