CHITCHAT CORNER
If you can't beat them, join them
LINDA K. BALLARD

Super Bowl Sunday means much more to some folks in this town besides football. Yes, football is still very much a part of the day, but it now starts in the churches with the initiation of Souper Bowl Day of Caring. At Kilgore's First Presbyterian Church the youth will be collecting money in big soup pots. The Helping Hands organization will be the recipient of the "soup" or proceeds collected.

The same thing will be happening at St. Luke's Methodist Church only the youth will be holding a bucket brigade for proceeds to go toward Helping Hands. This active bunch filled their gym with garage sale items and sold them last Friday and Saturday. Those proceeds go toward their youth camp.

It's always good to step in and see Mary Lamb. She tells us this little story: "My grandson (Logan Gilbreath) let out a big belch the other day. When I started to scold him he stopped me by saying, "Well, grandma, had you rather it come out of the attic instead of the basement?" "Well," she said. "I suppose I had." Mary asked him where he got such a phrase - from television, naturally.

Congratulations go out to Bill Hale for winning first place in the Fellowship Chili cook off held at First Christian Church recently. Now, we are beginning talk about real football food. We see where Pastor Bill is holding a Super bowl Party at his house, we hope he has some wieners and buns to go with that chili. (And how many people are you expecting to arrive, Pastor Bill?)

That's okay, if you have too many, send them over to the Single's Super Bowl Party being held at 201 S. Martin starting at 4 p.m. They are serving chili and tea. Bring snacks. Oh, they also want you to know other games will be available for those who do not like football. (Heaven forbid!)

We welcome into town, Donald and Ginger Hubbard and their lovely three children. Donald is the Head Football Coach and Athletic Director at Beckville High School. Now, he is also the new music director at Highland

Park Baptist Church. "He is awesome," said E'beth Chappell. "Super Bowl Sunday will be the second Sunday for he and his family to be a part of our church family and we are so pleased. He is really good with his music and he loves cantatas. We have already begun work on a spring musical. Oh, yes, there is definitely Wednesday practices," she said. (You should have known E'beth all coaches needs practice…) A special welcome goes out to the Hubbard Family.

I would like to extend a special Happy Birthday to Mary Wright from Houston. She broke a family tradition of celebrating her birthday with a son to come to Kilgore to be with a family member for the last time. Although this year will be remembered as one with mixed emotions, we hope she knows how loved she is for putting first things first. (Oh, yes, Mary just hit the big __, you know, so we hope she treasures every minute of it.)

If you can't beat them, join them, they always say. Enjoy your Superbowl Sunday; eat a hot dog or two for me and be sure and let us know what's going on with you. In the meantime, we can be reached at 903- 984-2593 or at chitchatlinda@ aol.com.
