Kilgore escapes with win

According to Kilgore High School tennis coach Jason Maroney, his tennis team played two opponents on Tuesday: Center High School and the wind.

Kilgore wound up on the winning end, though, taking 13 of 24 matches (13-11). The Bulldogs' varsity tennis team is off for about a week, and will play in a tournament on Friday, Feb. 8 at John Tyler High School in Tyler. Maroney's junior varsity team, however, will take its home court Tuesday against Center.

KHS won most of its girls singles matchups. No. 1 girls single Haley Smith beat Center's Abby Reeves, 6-1, 6-0; Callie Cunyus lost to Brittany Sowell, 6-2, 6-3; Emily Mitis beat Alex McFarland, 6-3, 6-2; Emily Spence beat Leslie Crawford, 6-2, 6-3; Brittany Conner lost to Shelby Hudspeth, 7-5, 6-1; Shelby Duncan beat Casey Fountain, 6-7, 7-6, 11-9; Meredith Gregg lost to Kasey Golden, 6-1, 6-1; and Lauren Terry beat Krista Fletcher, 6-0, 6-1.

The boys went 4-4 in singles play against Center. Trevar Compton lost to Gavin Ybarra, 3-6, 6-3, 10-6; Josh Way beat Jeremy Noble, 3-6, 6-1, 13-11; Josh Bailey lost to Clay Samuels, 6-1, 6-3; Eric Applegate lost to Justin Clark, 6-0, 6- 0; Joe Worden lost to Tommy Harris, 6-4, 6-4; Kade Bittick beat Zach Burns, 6-3, 6-0; Ethan High beat Tommy Bierman, 7-6, 7-6; and Jeremy Berryhill beat David Young, 6- 1, 6-3.

In mixed doubles play, Kilgore won both matchups. Compton and Cunyus beat Bierman and Hudspeth, 8-3, and Applegate and Duncan beat Young and Fountain, 8-5.

KHS won two of the three girls doubles matches. Mitis and Conner lost to Reeves and Sowell, 8-6; Smith and Spence beat McFarland and Golden, 8-6; and Gregg and Terry beat Crawford and Fletcher, 8-2.

The KHS boys lost their doubles matchups. Bailey and Bittick lost to Ybarra and Noble, 8-5; High and Worden lost to Samuels and Clark, 8-2; and Way and Berryhill lost to Burns and Harris, 8-6.
