...but Cardinals get gigantic victory
By JASON HEFFNER and MITCH LUCAS sports@kilgorenewsherald.com

Photo by John Niesner PLAYOFF BOUND? - Sabine head coach Tim Davis (kneeling) led his team to a 41-35 win at Spring Hill on Tuesday night. The win gives the Cardinals a 24-5 record on the season, and they're 4-2 in District 15-3A. The Lady Cardinals, though, didn't fare as well, losing at Spring Hill, 61-44. The loss was the Lady Cardinals' first this season in district play. Both Sabine teams will hit the court again on Friday - they'll both be at home, taking on Gladewater.
The trip to Longview was again bittersweet for Sabine High School's basketball programs on Tuesday night.

Coach Tim Davis' Cardinals won their fourth District 15-3A game of the season, beating the Panthers, 41-35. The Lady Cardinals, though, suffered their first district loss, falling to Spring Hill, 61-44.

Sabine's teams come home Friday night to face Gladewater.

Spring Hill 61, Sabine 44 (girls): In spite of Sabine's glossy 7-0 record coming into this game, the win here by Spring Hill's girls forced a two-way tie for first place in the district, with both teams now at 7-1 against district competition.

For Sabine, it was a little bit of an off-night offensively. No player had more than 11 points, although three players - Katy Strange, Samantha Jackson and Cortnee Ryan - each scored 11.

The big quarter for the Lady Panthers was the third, when they went on a 10-0 scoring run.

Spring Hill's Lady Panthers placed four players in double figures: Shannon Sanders, who led all scorers with 19; Kelsey Krupa had 14; Kayla Self with 13, and Ashton Reed with 10.

Coach Paul Bell's Lady Cards, who had beaten Spring Hill 52-43 earlier in the season, are 16-10 overall, and hope to start a new winning streak at home Friday against Gladewater.

Sabine 41, Spring Hill 35 (boys): The fourth 15-3A win for the Cards didn't come easy, but it did come, thanks in large part to a big second half by Noah Jackson.

Jackson led Sabine with 15 points as the Cardinals won their second straight game.

Like the Lady Cardinals, the boys host Gladewater on Friday. With the win, Sabine is now 24-5 overall, 4-2 in 15-3A play.

Jacob Kenna added 11 for Sabine, who played one heck of a defensive game. Sabine held Spring Hill to just eight third-quarter points, and their leading scorer - Stephan Tarpley - had only eight.

Both teams actually had the lead at times during the fourth quarter, but Sabine's free-throw shooting was the difference in the game.
