One of the Kilgore High School soccer teams warded off the cold weather and the challenge of a feisty Marshall squad to win a District 17-4A game, just one - the other KHS team is left searching for answers.
Kilgore's Lady Bulldogs were at home Friday night, facing Marshall in a varsity-only challenge after the junior varsity game was called due to the rainy, cold weather. KHS overcame the weather and the Lady Mavs for a convincing 4-0 win, moving the Lady Bulldogs' overall record to 3-4, and bringing them to an even 2-2 in district play. The Bulldogs stumbled on the road, falling to Marshall, 2-1. The 'Dogs are now 1-3 in district play.
Both teams have an open date on Tuesday, then face Pine Tree on Friday. Coach Kris Duplissey's boys will be home, beginning with junior varsity at 5:30 p.m., and coach Amanda Walzel's girls will be at Pine Tree, also a 5:30 p.m. JV start.
• Kilgore 4, Marshall 0 (girls): The Lady Mavs appeared sluggish, but the Lady Bulldogs seemed loose and ready to play in spite of a cold night here at R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium.
Kilgore scored with 14:25 left in the first half, a goal by Macy Reynolds, and that wound up opening the floodgates. Sara Stewart got her first of two goals with 3:04 left in the half, putting KHS up 2-0 at halftime.
Stewart found the net again with less than six minutes gone by in the second half, putting Kilgore up by three, and the final goal of the game was scored by the returning Courtney Stoner with 26:50 left. Stoner had been injured, and was playing in her first game of the season.
• Marshall 2, Kilgore 1 (boys): Marshall's Julio Valle scored with just over 17 minutes left to give Marshall a 2-0 lead, enough to hold off the Bulldogs and give KHS its second straight loss.
Kilgore (4-4 overall) never led - the Mavericks took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Grey Acuna with 14 minutes left in the first half. And while Kilgore outshot Marshall in the second half (KHS had nine shots on goal), the Bulldogs could only net one, a goal from about 25 yards out by Garrett Fields with just over three minutes remaining.
Like the girls, the boys' JV game was cancelled.
