Sabine routs MHS
And something else just in: Don't write off the Sabine boys in District 15-3A. Coach Paul Bell's Lady Cardinals proved already they are for real, and Friday night, they demonstrated that district championship talk has to start with them. Sabine's girls routed Mineola, 50-28, and then the Cardinals followed suit, winning 71-34. The win gives the Lady Cards a perfect 7-0 record in 15-3A, and the Cardinals' win breaks a two-game losing streak. Both teams face Spring Hill on Tuesday, at Spring Hill. • Sabine 50, Mineola 28 (girls): A 23-point fourth quarter finished off Mineola, and erased all possibility of an upset. Samantha Jackson once again led Sabine in scoring with 22 points. She had five rebounds, four steals and an assist. Cortnee Ryan had 13 points, hit three three-point shots, had six rebounds and four steals.
Brittany Tuck's eight points led Mineola. Sabine is 16-9 overall. Sabine's JV girls also won, 45- 32, and are 6-1 in district play. • Sabine 71, Mineola 34 (boys): Sabine's Jacob Dunaway scored 14 points for the second game in a row, and in the process, helped his Cardinals overwhelm the Mineola Yellowjackets at home. The loss broke a two-game losing streak for the once redhot Cardinals, who are now 23- 5 overall on the season for coach Tim Davis, and 3-2 after the first round of District 15-3A play. Sabine connected on six threepointers in the second quarter, outscoring Mineola 32-10 in the frame. The Cards hit eight three-pointers as a team on the night. Point guard Colton Kirk added 12 points, including two three-pointers. Noah Jackson followed with 11 points and also hit two from behind the arc. Rounding out the scoring for Sabine: Jacob Kenna had eight points; Lie'Quan Byrd had seven; Glen Hutchison had six; Josh Herod, five; and Jake Taylor hit a free throw. Mineola's Nic Watkins made four three-pointers to lead Mineola with 12 points. The Cardinals will travel to Spring Hill on Tuesday to face the Panthers, while the Yellowjackets will travel to Gladewater to kick off the second round of 15-3A competition. Sabine's JV team also won, beating Mineola 50-40. Zach Royce had 13 points for the JV Cards. Chance Haskins had 11, Marc Cunningham nine, Jerrel Chumley six, Tyler Weatherford five, Hunter Powdrill four, and Wesley Eaton two. |
