Sabine girls blow by Mineola Coach Paul Bell's Sabine High School Lady Cardinals proved Tuesday that the school's boys basketball program isn't alone: there's some very good basketball being played by both Liberty City teams. Sabine swarmed all over Mineola Tuesday night, beating MHS 50-18. Every single Sabine player scored, coach Bell said. The Lady Cardinals improve to 4-1 on the season and are in a tournament at Spring Hill this weekend. Unlike some area schools, though, the Lady Cards will begin district play before the Christmas break. They open District 18-2A play at home Dec. 16 against Union Grove. Last night against Mineola, Cassie Headley led Sabine in scoring with a 12-point night. She also had five steals. Shayla Gossett scored eight points and had eight rebounds. Cortnee Ryan scored six points, had six rebounds and four steals, and Jessica Woodruff and Katy Strange each scored six points and had two rebounds — Strange also had two steals. Alex Easley and Ashley Gadson each had four points. Gadson led the rebounding effort with 14, and Easley had five. Lindsay McClain and Jamaie Simmons each scored two points; McClain had five rebounds, and Simmons two steals. Sabine led 30-12 at halftime. Coach Tim Davis' Sabine boys, who are 7-0 and ranked No. 7 in the state in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches poll, are off this week and host Como-Pickton on Tuesday. Sabine's freshmen and junior varsity boys, coached by Jason Heffner and Andre Williams, are in a tournament at White Oak this weekend. The Cardinals have quite a bit of basketball to play prior to Christmas break, including their own Last-Man-Standing tournament Dec. 18- 20. The Cards do get to wait until after the break before starting off district play with a home game against Harleton Jan. 2.
