Win over Hallsville puts Cards at 7-0 for the season
With four seconds left in overtime and the score tied at 66, Sabine's Josh Montana saved the ball out of bounds near halfcourt. Lie'Quan Byrd came away with the ball through a crowd, took three long dribbles and layed the ball up off the backboard as time expired.
The last-second shot gave Sabine a 68-66 win over class 4- A Hallsville and preserves the team's undefeated streak. They Cards are now 7-0 on the season.
Byd and Noah Jackson led Sabine scorers with 15 points each. Tyler Woodrell scored 11 and Montana added 10. Jacob Kenna contributed nine points and Colton Kirk scored 8. Byrd also hit three 3-pointers and collectged 10 rebounds. Jackson recorded 8 rebounds and Montana finished with seven.
Hallsville is 2-1 on the season. Sabine Cardinal LaQuan Byrd, who also scored the winning basket at the buzzer, blocks a Hallsville shot. Sabine defeated Hallsville 68-66 in overtime earlier this week to remain undefeated. They play again Dec. 9. Katy Strange hit for 17 points, including a pair of 3- pointers, and Shayla Gossett pulled down nine points for the Lady Cardinals en route to a 60-35 rout of the Gilmer Buckeyes.
Sabine is now 3-1 on the season and Gilmer is 4-1.
As evidenced in the final tally, defense ruled for the Cardinals — the team finished the night with 15 rebounds, including six by Cortnee Ryan. Ryan also hauled in eight rebounds; Shayla Gossett pulled down nine of the team's total 39.
Other Cardinal scorers included Cassie Headley, 15; Ryan, nine; Lindsay McClain, six; Ashley Gadson, four; Alex Easley, three; Gossett, two and Jessica Woodruff, two.
The Lady Cardinals host Mineola here Tuesday, December 9, at 5 p.m.
