BASKETBALL

KC teams in action Tuesday

The Kilgore College basketball teams were both to face Panola College here at Masters Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon, following the Sunday-edition deadline for the Kilgore News Herald. Those afternoon games marked the opening of the Region XIV Conference season for both the Rangers and the Lady Rangers, who were doing well going in — coach Roy Thomas' Lady Rangers were 6- 0 prior to tipoff against Panola, and coach Brian Hoberecht's Rangers were 4-5, but winners of three straight.

With Thanksgiving this week, the schedule is a little different. The Lady Rangers will be at home Tuesday night against San Jacinto, a 5:30 p.m. start, and the men will hit the road and face Navarro at Corsicana on Tuesday, a 7:30 p.m. tipoff. The teams take the remainder of Thanksgiving week off.

The Rangers, then, visit Southwest Christian for a non-conference rematch on Dec. 1, and are back at home Dec. 3 against Northwestern State (La.) junior varsity. That is the second half of a doubleheader — the Lady Rangers play a conference game Dec. 3 at 5:30 p.m. against Arkansas Baptist.

KHS boys open Tuesday; girls at Sabine on Monday

Coach Jimmy Williams' Kilgore High School boys basketball program opens the 2008-09 season on the road at Athens on Tuesday, a 5 p.m. start for freshmen with varsity to follow. The Bulldogs won't play again Thanksgiving week, and are back in action Tuesday, Dec. 2 for their home opener agaisnt Gladewater.

Coach Davia Garrett's Lady Bulldogs are already playing. The Lady Bulldogs won their season opener at Carthage, dropped decisions at home to Marshall and Longview, and were to play at Tyler Lee on Saturday afternoon, following the publication of this Sunday edition. The Lady 'Dogs will go to Liberty City on Monday night to face Sabine, then take Thanksgiving week off and be back in action Dec. 2 at Canton.

KYBA registration Dec. 6

A second registration for the Kilgore Youth Basketball Association's upcoming season will be Saturday, Dec. 6 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the older gymnasium on the Kilgore High School campus. This is for boys and girls first through seventh grades.

KYBA official Tim Capps said there was a good turnout for the first registration, and that the league is expecting over 300 children to participate this season.

Games are played on Saturdays at KHS, and Capps noted the enrollment has increased the last two years.

Registration is $40 for the first child, $30 for each additional child, and for more information, call Reggie Henson at (903) 983- 0945, or Capps at (903) 984-3082.
