The Sabine High School boys basketball team won 28 games and went two rounds deep into the playoffs last school year, and this year, coach Tim Davis' Cardinals, returning almost all their players, are searching for more.
The Card inals, ranked 16th in the state in Class 2A, swarmed all over visiting Clarksville on Tuesday night in the 2008-09 season opener, scoring 34 first-half points and going on for a big 72-33 victory.
Sabine was paced by a pair of players with 16 points each: Noah Jackson and Tyler Woodrell. Jacob Kenna added 12 points, Colton Kirk and Zach Royce eight each, Lie'Quan Byrd seven, Jerrel Chumley three, and Josh Montana, two.
Clarksville was led by Demontrae Scales, who had seven points, and Kenyondrian Harris, who had five.
Sabine also won the JV game, 53-35, led by Kendrick Chumley's 22 points.
The Cardinals' varsity and JV teams will play in a tournament at Como-Pickton this weekend, then host Carthage on Monday in a special 1 p.m. freshman-game start time, with JV and varsity to follow.
