Calif. clerks: When does gay-marriage ban begin
      FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - County clerks across California are clamoring for legal advice to resolve confusion about when to begin the gay-marriage ban that voters passed last week in a ballot initiative. At least three same-sex couples have obtained marriage licenses since the Nov. 4 passage of the measure overturning the state Supreme Court decision legalizing gay marriage.

      BANGOR, Maine (AP) — A group of religious leaders from across Maine is throwing its support behind same-sex marriage. The Rev. Mark Doty of Hammond Street Congregational Church in Bangor says it's time to raise voices on behalf of Mainers who're denied the right to marry "with the person of their choice.

Nebraska parents rush to abandon children
      LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - The mother was running out of more than patience when she abandoned her 18-year-old daughter at a hospital over the weekend under Nebraska's safe-haven law. She was also running out of time: She knew that state lawmakers would soon meet in a special session to amend the illfated law so that it would apply to newborns only.

      COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - It's a true season of change: The Salvation Army is experimenting with a plastic alternative for folks who don't have cash to throw in a holiday red kettle. This season, five bell-ringers in El Paso County, Colo., will be the first to accept debit and credit cards along with spare change and bills.

SC priest: No communion for Obama supporters
      COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina Roman Catholic priest has told his parishioners that they should refrain from receiving Holy Communion if they voted for Barack Obama because the Democratic president-elect supports abortion, and supporting him "constitutes material cooperation with intrinsic evil.
