Scouts collect food for two Kilgore-area food pantries

It's that time of year again when many Kilgore residents will find a bag hanging on their doors. But don't throw it away; local Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts are on their annual mission to gather food to help local people in need.

Members of Boy Scout Troop 252, sponsored by the Kilgore Rotary Club, and Cub Scout Pack 251, sponsored by St. Luke's Methodist Church, will put the donation bags on porches and doorknobs on Saturday, Nov. 15, in hopes they will be filled with non-perishable foods such as canned and boxed goods.

The scouts will return the following Saturday, Nov. 22, to pick up the filled sacks, which will then be taken to the Helping Hands food pantry and the Kilgore Crisis Center.

"Please put those filled sacks on your porch by 9 a.m. on the pick-up date so that our scouts can easily see them and collect them," said Carolyn Holcombe, Cub Master of Pack 251.

If your donation sack is not picked up on Nov. 22, please call Helping Hands at 903-984-1796 or Holcombe at 987-1880 so arrangements can be made.

Scouting for Food is a nationwide food collection effort carried out by Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts for the last 30 years or so. Holcombe said Kilgore scouts have been "Scouting for Food" for the past 22 years.
