Future district governor speaks to Kilgore Rotarians

Eddie Shawn honor Katy Lee Strange, a senior at SHS, as Student of the Month at Rotary. Jim Archer of Pittsburg, Rotary District Governor nominee, was the guest speaker for the Kilgore Rotary Club on Wednesday.
Archer spoke to the club and introduced himself to members who might not know him. He will be district governor in two years and is trying to get to know people now so the transition into his year will be smooth.
He mostly gave personal information and gave just a few details about what he wants to accomplish as district governor. He said he is looking forward to his role and added the Kilgore club is noted in the district as being one of the leaders in a wide variety of categories.
In other Rotary news, Eddie Shawn, principal of Sabine High School, introduced Katy Lee Strange as the Student of the Month. Katy is the daughter of Mike and Cheryl Strange.
She is a senior at SHS, is on the A-B Honor Roll, is a basketball player and has been a recipient of honors while playing. She has participated in STARS and Anchor Club and has been a recipient of the Kilgore College All-Region Honor Leadership Award.
Eddie Shawn, principal of Sabine High School, helps the Kilgore Rotary Club honor Cheryl Carlton as Teacher of the Month. She is also active in her church youth group as well as the Texas High School Rodeo Association and the Four-States High School Rodeo Association. She was recently named the THSRA state champion breakaway roper.
Katy plans to study nursing in college.
Shawn also introduced Cheryl Carlton of Sabine as Teacher of the Month. She is an English teacher and has been for over 33 years. She has earned many teaching honors for her work, and is best known for inspiring students to do their best with unique teaching techniques.
She has been GLOBE Teacher of the Year and a Sabine ISD Guiding Star Award winner.
Claud Wallace introduced Brian Johnston as Public Servant of the Month. The son of Perry and Carolyn Johnston, Brian is an executive with Merritt Tool in Kilgore.
He was honored, however, for being an election judge in Gregg County, a position he has held for a number of years. He works with the precinct at Kilgore High School. He will be administrating the election coming up Tuesday.
Sammy York, president of the Kilgore Rotary Club, presents a book to Jim Archer. The Kilgore club sent representatives to the Foundation Seminar Saturday and signed up to assist a number of projects in foreign countries. Most of the ones that drew interest from Kilgore involve aiding children.
John Lockman reminded Kilgore members that the fish fry is this coming Saturday and will be held in the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall from 5 until 8 p.m. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children 13 and under. Tickets are on sale at the door or from any club member. Meals can be eaten in or taken out. The menu includes fish, fries, hushpuppies, cole slaw, tomato relish, pickles and a drink. The proceeds go to the Rotary Scholarship Fund.
This week, Mary Paige Woodfin, a volunteer with the Alzheimer's Alliance of Northeast Texas, will be the guest speaker for the Kilgore Rotary Club.
The Kilgore Rotary Club meets each Wednesday at noon in the ballroom of the Meadowbrook Country Club. Guests are always welcome.
