"And that's the way it was" at Kilgore Woman's Club

The Kilgore Woman's Club met on Oct. 23 at the home of Marada Early. Carolyn Kennedy assisted as hostess. President Carroll Bolton presided, calling the meeting to order and leading members in the Club Collect.

Secretary Marion Dovel read the minutes of the last meeting and Treasurer Marada Early discussed club finances. Legislative Chairman Lauren Cunyus and Civic Affairs Chairman Ellen Watson reported on state and local affairs. Virginia Wallace, Peggy Bowne and Ellen Watson presented Eukie Grautink for membership.

Carolyn Kennedy was introduced to give the program. This year's theme is "And That's The Way It Is" in the news, and Mrs. Kennedy chose to review an article by Doris Kerns Goodwin titled "The Secrets of America's Great Presidents."

Mrs. Kennedy began by saying she knew we were all tired of politics but she also thought we would enjoy looking back in history to learn what qualities past presidents had that made them great.

Taking Abraham Lincoln and Franklin Roosevelt as guides, there are 10 attributes that distinguish truly great presidents. They are:

1. They have the courage to stay strong;

2. Self confidence; 3. The ability to learn from errors; 4. A willingness to change; 5. Emotional intelligence; 6. Self-control; 7. A popular touch; 8. A moral compass; 9. A capacity to relax; and

10. A gift for inspiring others.

Those attending were Patsy Abernathy, Nadine Adamson, Carroll Bolton, Peggy Bowne, Dimples Burns, Ruth Anne Camp, Sharon Cox, Lauren Cunyus, Patti Cunyus, Ray Cunyus, Marion Dovel, Frankie Flory, Marada Early, Rosalee Floyd, Carolyn Kennedy, Vernie Kunkel, Linda Sartor, Virginia Wallace, Ellen Watson, and guests Roberta Boggs and Joan Smith.
