FOOTBALL KHS splits Thursday games at Whitehouse
Photo by Lester Murray LOOKING TO MAKE SOMETHING HAPPEN — Maude Laird Middle School eighth-grade B team quarterback Jeffrey Platt (17) rolls out to make a play against Whitehouse. The eighth grade and the junior varsity lost their Thursday night games to Whitehouse, but the freshmen won, 38-24. Kilgore's varsity hosts Whitehouse tonight in a big District 14-4A contest. The Kilgore High School freshmen and junior varsity football programs split with Whitehouse at Whitehouse on Thursday, with the freshmen taking a 38-24 win and the JV falling, 28-6.
Kilgore's freshmen and JV will host Jacksonville next Thursday night, and conclude the season Nov. 6 at Nacogdoches.
Coach Joey Pippen's freshmen Bulldogs moved to 7-1 overall and 2-1 in District 14-4A with the win. Starting quarterback Riley Toler was injured last week and is dayto day, Pippen said, but noted that Matthew Dickey is doing a great job. Dickey had three touchdown passes last night, all to Shaun Williams.
Kilgore's first possession of the night resulted in a score, a 69-yard touchdown run by Ladarius Anthony. Anthony finished the contest with 137 yards and the score on 16 carries.
Kilgore took a 14-6 lead on a 24-yard pass from Dickey to Williams, with the extra point by Hugo Orta. Orta went 5-for-5 in extrapoint kicks with a field goal, as well, a 32-yarder.
The Bulldogs scored twice more when Dickey and Williams hooked up on pass plays of 31 and 14 yards, respectively, and the final score of the night was a 14-yard run by Dontre Halton.
Dickey finished 4-of-6 for 77 yards and three touchdowns, all three to Williams. Deontre Williams had an 8- yard catch from Dickey, as well, and also had a carry for 8 yards. Dickey rushed for 7 yards on two carries, and Halton finished with 50 yards and the touchdown on eight carries.
Pippen also complimented his offensive line for doing a great job. "They've performed at a high level all year."
Coach Jay Dean's JV team lost 28-6, but just the second loss all season. Keith Wright caught a touchdown pass from Kaleb Brisendine for the JV's only score. Dean said Josh Medford also played well in the contest for KHS (5-2, 2-1).
Bulldogs host Whitehouse tonight; KC in Okla. Saturday
One of the biggest football games of the year in District 14-4A takes place here at R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium tonight, as Kilgore (5-2 overall, 1-1 in district play) hosts Whitehouse (officially 6-1 overall, although that includes a forfeit of a game they lost, and 2-0 in district play). Kickoff, as usual, is at 7:30 p.m.
If you can't be in attendance but would like to listen to the game, do so on 1240- AM, or online at tsrnsports.com, the Texas Sports Radio Network website. The team of Don Hedrick, Ronnie Chappell and Doug Smith handles the broadcast.
Other games in the Kilgore News Herald's coverage area tonight, all with 7:30 kickoffs:
• Sabine (2-5) hosts Elysian Fields. Sabine has lost four straight, and is still looking for its first District 18- 2A win.
• West Rusk (7-0) visits Garrison. The Raiders' fans are hoping to see their team go 8-0. WR coach John Frazier would like to see that, too, but is more concerned with 3-0 — as in the Raiders' record in District 19-2A if they win tonight.
• Overton (3-5) visits Carlisle. The Mustangs haven't won since the first week of District 20-1A, and first-year coach Ty Robinson would love to break that losing streak tonight.
• Leverett's Chapel (5-2) hosts Morgan, a six-man contest. This will be, in all likelihood, the final home game of the year for the LC Lions, still with strong hopes for the playoffs. They finish the regular season next week at Oglesby.
Kilgore College (4-3 overall, 3-2 in the Southwest Junior College Football Conference) visits Northeastern Oklahoma A&M (NEO) at 3 p.m. on Saturday. A win by the Rangers likely wraps up a conference playoff spot. KC finishes its regular-season schedule next week at home against Cisco.
