Kilgore routs LHS; big match vs. Nac on Thursday

HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS

This just in: the Kilgore High Schoo tennis team is on a mission this fall season, and although the matches at Longview High last Saturday don't count in the district standings, it was still an impressive win.

Kilgore beat Longview convincingly, 24-0, on Saturday morning, and is playing well headed into a very important matchup with Nacogdoches on Thursday. A win over Nac Thursday here at KHS secures a trip to the regional tournament for the Bulldogs. That's in Grapevine on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1.

Kilgore's junior varsity tennis team beat Wills Point Thursday, 16-14, and plays at Nac today.

Kilgore was working with a lot of JV players on varsity at Longview because several varsity players, including Trevar Compton, Haley Smith and Jody Madding, were playing on an East Texas team in a tournament.

For KHS in boys singles on Saturday, everybody won. Josh Way beat Aaron Dobbins, 6-3, 6-1; Josh Bailey beat Drew Alexander, 6-0, 6-2; Kade Bittick beat Matt Cole, 6-4, 6- 1; Eric Applegate beat Connor Erickstad, 6-1, 6-2; Trent Raby beat Brandon Dyer, 6-2, 3-6, 10-2; Jeremy Berryhill beat Fisher Taylor, 6-1, 6-0; Chance Osteen beat Tobeya Ibitayo, 8- 1; Jose Tapia beat Alexander, 8- 2; and Daniel Modisette beat Cole, 8-4.

In boys doubles, Bailey and Bittick beat Dobbins and Cole, 6-0, 6-3; Way and Berryhill teamed to beat Erickstad and Alexander, 6-2, 6-3; Applegate and Tapia defeated Ihitayo and Taylor, 6-1, 6-1; and Osteen and Modisette beat the same team, 8-3.

Kilgore's girls were equally as good as the boys on Saturday, winning all their matchups with the Lobos. In girls singles play, Meredith Gregg beat Kayla Farrar, 6-0, 6-4; Chelsey Cox defeated Alexa Newsom, 8-2; Caitlind Trowbridge beat Heyley Hodson, 8-2; Shawna Bass defeated Conlan Northcutt, 6- 1, 6-3; Shelby Duncan beat Abby Graham, 6-2, 6-1; Monte Broussard beat Abby Rushing, 8-0; and Zonera Javed beat Graham, 8-2.

Cox and Duncan teamed to beat Hodson and Newsom 4-6, 6-2, 10-8 in girls doubles play; Trowbridge and Bass beat Graham and Farrar, 6-2, 6-1; and Naomi Worden and Foxworth beat Hodson and Newsom, 8- 2.

Gregg and Raby teamed to beat Northcutt and Dyer, 6-2, 6-3, in the only mixed doubles match of the day.
