LOCAL SPORTS IN BRIEF VOLLEYBALL Kilgore at home tonight The Kilgore High School volleyball team, contending for a spot in the District 14-4A playoffs, host Jacksonville tonight as the second round of district play begins. Kilgore is 3-2 after round one, having won all of its home games and lost both on the road, including the district opener at Jacksonville a couple of weeks ago. The Lady Bulldogs beat Lindale on Friday night in four games. Tonight is senior night. Freshmen play at 5 p.m., followed by junior varsity, then varsity in the nightcap, around 7 or 7:15 p.m. Sabine at White Oak tonight The Sabine High School Lady Cardinals beat Big Sandy on Friday to even their District 18-2A record at 3-3, and have an important match at White Oak tonight as district play continues. Freshmen play at 4:30 p.m. Against Big Sandy, Sabine won in four, 25-23, 15-25, 25-16, 25-22, giving coach Rickey Hammontree's team a 16-13 overall record. For Sabine, Cortnee Ryan had 22 kills and five blocks. Shayla Gossett had 11 kills, two blocks and four assists. Alex Easley had two kills, a block, 14 assists and went 21-of-21 from the service line. Krystal Kent had 10 digs and was 17-of-17 from the line, and Cassie Headley had two digs, 14 assists and was 10-of-10 from the line. Also, Kendra Whitehead had five kills and an ace; Carra Smitherman had two kills and three blocks; Lindsey Bryce had six digs and two aces; and Brittany Stuart had four kills and an assist. FOOTBALL Semi-pro team seeks players The Texas Xtreme semi professional football team is seeking new players at all positions for the upcoming 2009 season. Players must be a minimum of 18 to participate. Tryouts will be conducted at Brownsboro High School practice field. Registration will begin each Saturday through November 22 at 10 a.m. Tryout fees are $20 per person. Participants should wear clothing suitable for basic football drills and cleattype shoes.
