KILGOROUND NOT EXACTLY A great football weekend for anyone, was it? I guess maybe if you're a University of Texas fan, or a West Rusk fan, you're happy, Other than that, it was pretty much the pits. — In high school play, Kilgore was upset by Lindale on Friday, and Sabine led Harleton big, until Harleton staged a major fourth-quarter comeback. West Rusk remained undefeated with a win over Elkhart. — Kilgore College was upset by Tyler on Saturday (see our story on page 8 today), and as everyone not named Rip Van Winkle knows by now, Texas knocked off Oklahoma and is now the No. 1- ranked team in major college football. — The Dallas Cowboys were less than stellar in a loss to Arizona on Sunday in overtime that — take my word for it — could have been a lot worse if not for some officiating calls made in the Cow- boys' favor. Just the truth, folks. At any rate, quarterback Tony Romo, punter Mat McBriar and tailback Felix Jones are all hurting now, and Romo may miss up to four weeks (three games) with an injured throwing hand. On the bright side, there's always this week. KHS visits Henderson this Friday. Sabine visits Harmony, West Rusk hosts Frankston, Overton hosts Grapeland and Leverett's Chapel, playing a six-man football schedule, visits Walnut Springs. All of these games are district games, and all of them begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday. KC will host Trinity Valley at 3 p.m. Saturday, and that's homecoming this year. +++ HIGHLAND PARK Baptist Church will host its annual bazaar and soup luncheon this Friday at the church's family life center. The bazaar, featuring crafts and lots of other things (including Christmas decorations, ladies), as well as baked goods. That will be held from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. The soup luncheon, which will have a big variety of soups, sides of cornbread, dessert and tea, will cost $5 for adults, and $2.50 for kids under 12. That will be held from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. If you need to ask something about either of these items, call (903) 984-6900 during normal business hours. +++ MAUDE LAIRD MIDDLE SCHOOL is holding one of two annual book fairs this week. The fair will run through Friday at noon. Come by and check out all the goodies for sale and help support the library. Contact Diane Wimberley, the MLMS librarian, for more details. +++ THE KHS SCIENCE CLUB will sponsor its semi-annual "Saturday for Science" this Saturday. The theme this year is "Mad Scientists' Laboratories." All KISD elementary students are invited and eight of the MLMS GT students will be helping the KHS students chaperone the younger children. Labs will be devoted to water rockets, hovercraft, exploding Gummi Bears, polar bear snot, diaper drippings, smelly chemistry, rainbow milk and ooblek. Hey, don't shoot the messenger — I just report it. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. at the circle drive entrance to the high school and parents can pick up their children at noon on the circle drive. We will be selling science related favors and future KHS science club member T-shirts. The registration fee is $5 per student. +++ HAPPY BIRTHDAY TODAY to Christopher O'Neal, Elizabeth Whitehead, Mickey Turner, Dr. Michael McShan, Holli Crouch Johnson, Steve Dean, Michael Renfro, James H.
