Kilgore Garden Club vitist Shakespeare Garden
Dolores Meyers, Carroll Bolton, Martha Lee were in attendence at the Kilgore Garden Club Kilgore Garden Club members heard about and later visited the beautiful Shakespeare Garden during their Oct. 2 meeting, held in the home of Carroll Bolton.
Co-hostesses were Dolores Meyers and Martha Lee. Refreshments were served from a beautifully decorated table in the fall colors.
After a brief business meeting, Darlene Bingham introduced Virginia Hudson, who gave a very interesting and informative program on the Shakespeare Garden. Ms. Hudson reflected back to how the idea of the garden began. The late Nelda Lewis started a drive to raise money to plant and maintain the plot across from the Van Cliburn Auditorium. Kilgore Improvement Beautification Association members agreed to maintain the project. Only plants mentioned in Shakespeare's writings may be planted there.
Club members noted that Kilgore is fortunate to have citizens like Ms. Hudson, who took a special interest. She and five others have given more than 625 hours in labor. She will attain a Master Gardener Certificate for her efforts.
A major fall and spring planting is being planned by Ms. Hudson and Cherisa York. More volunteers are needed. After the program, members of the club walked to the garden to see its progress. Needless to say, all were impressed.
Present were: Patsy Abernathy, Cynthia Adams, Birdie Barron, Darlene Bingham, Carroll Bolton, Peggy Bowne, Helen Goodwin, Martha Lee, Alice Lowery, Dolores Meyers, Jean Robertson, Margie Hall and Kay Yates.
The next club meeting will be Thursday, Nov. 6, at the home of Melynda Keenon. Guests are welcomed. The group will gather at the First Presbyterian parking lot at 9:40 a.m. to carpool to the meeting.
