KILGOROUND

BILL WOODALL

OUR NEW EDITOR here, Brenda Brown, tells me she's a fifth-generation Texan. That would extend back to her great-greatgrandparents.

I HAVE no idea where my great-greats lived. I can count four generations of paternal relatives who were at least part-time Texans. Our family is a peripatetic bunch and each member of those four generations spent some time outside the state. My son and daughters are "fifth generation" but, true to his roots, my son now lives elsewhere.

BUT I think we all enjoy - or enjoyed - barbecue and chili. That ought to count for something.

WHEN you hear Kilgore's emergency sirens at noon Wednesday, stay calm. It'll be merely a test of the system.

WEATHER permitting, of course.

Halloween carnivals, which genuinely please the organizers of Kilgore events, but the community does solidly support its Harvest Moon Carnival.

THE event this year is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 25, from 6 until 9 p.m.

THERE is no Republican Party office in Kilgore and local GOP activists have been driving to Longview to pick up yard signs.

WE HAVE news: signs are now available in Kilgore. But they're available at a private residence and the residents are afraid they'll be buried with requests. So here's the deal: I have the phone number of the local sign providers and if you call the News Herald, we'll give you that number. You can then call them and make arrangements to pick up your Mc- Cain/Palin yard signs.

AND, the GOP would really appreciate a donation… $2 to $5 or such.

IF YOU can believe it, fund-raising for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life is already underway. The Christ the King Crusaders are again offering buckets (!) of wonderful, peanut, pecan and cashew brittle. If you've a taste for good brittle, call (903) 983-1784… they might even deliver.
