District play here for LC — finally

Photo by Rev. Edwin Findley Photo by Rev. Edwin Findley Tonight, the Leverett's Chapel six-man football team will play its first district game since the 1980s.

LC (4-1) will host Iredell in the first six-man Division II District 15 game of the season. LC resumed football a few years ago after not having a football program of any kind throughout the 1990s. Back then, the Lions had a Class 1A program, but elected to get their feet wet with six-man ball earlier this decade.

Iredell should provide a good test. The Dragons, coached by Don Coffell, went 8-4 a year ago and 3-1 in district play. And the top player back on defense is corner Brady Lee, who was a six-man all-state pick last season.

LC might just open some eyes with a win over the Dragons, but the Lions have played fairly well all season, having lost just the one game to Avalon.

Last week at Fannindel, the Lions had 420 yards of offense, typical for a six-man game, and won 68-48. The week before, they scored 84 points in a win over Apple Springs at Lufkin.

Last week, Hunter Hammontree helped LC score six touchdowns, two field goals and six extra points. The two field goals came in the first quarter, a 35- yarder and a 37-yarder. He then passed for five touchdowns and ran for another. Three of the touchdowns went to Trevor Dean (a 21-yard pass, a 12-yard pass and a 3-yard pass).

Hammontree also had a touchdown pass to Kyle Youngblood from the 18.

Dean had six touchdowns on the night.

LC has three games left following the game against Iredell. The Lions are at Walnut Springs on Oct. 17, host Morgan on Oct. 24 and visit Oglesby Oct. 31 to finish the regular season.

LC is coached by Matt Everett.
