Mathis cited for service to Gregg County
JOHN MATHIS "If you name it, I have seen it," said John Mathis, Gregg County Pct. 4 commissioner.
Mathis received an award Monday for 25 years of commissioned service to Gregg County.
In late 2006 Mathis was awarded for 32 years of service — which includes his years as a reserve officer — bringing him to 34 total, since 1974.
After seven years as a reserve officer, Mathis made the move to sheriff 's deputy in 1981. From there he worked his way up through the ranks, culminating in his election to seat for on Gregg County Commissioners' Court.
Mathis serves Precinct 4 which includes northwestern Kilgore and stretches to Lakeport and south Longview.
"I have worked under four sheriffs and I have seen a lot of change," Mathis said. "Now I am in a position to be part of the changes made in this county."
Since he was sworn in on Jan. 1, 2007 Mathis has cleaned up the yard at Pct. 4, and replaced numerous pieces of outdated and worn-out equipment. Mathis has also worked to improve many roads, including Meadow Lane, which had been washed out numerous times and caused at least two accidents.
"I am here to make a difference. I think that is evident in my precinct and when I vote," Mathis said.
