Flurry of upsets gets the attention of Leach, Red Raiders
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
LUBBOCK (AP) — Texas Tech's Mike Leach made sure his No. 7 Red Raiders understood how they jumped three spots in the rankings without playing a game. The rise was a product of the season's first upsetfilled weekend, when Oregon State's shocker over No. 1 USC last Thursday sparked a flurry that took down two other top-five teams in Georgia and Florida.

Sabine looks for another 'W' at Winona
By MITCH LUCAS sports@kilgorenewsherald.com
Before you can run, you've got to learn to walk. It's a fact of life. And it's true in football, too. Sabine High School head coach Jerry Baker, in his first season, is guiding the young Cardinals along the way. And while there are going to be ups (wins over Troup and Beckville) and downs (last week's homecoming loss to Union Grove), there needs to be growth.

No KHS, WR, but intrigue? Yes
WHAT'S CAUSING ALL THIS?
MITCH LUCAS
No Kilgore this weekend, thanks to the open date? No West Rusk, for the same reason? Yeah, I'm kind of let down, too. But there are still a lot of interesting things going on, both locally and in the college and NFL ranks.

Cayuga challenge
By MITCH LUCAS sports@kilgorenewsherald.com
Don't tell Overton High School head football coach about his opponent this weekend, Cayuga. He already knows. He knows they're state-ranked. He knows about speedy tailback Traylon Shead. And when the Mustangs (3-2 overall, 1-0 in District 20-1A) line up to take the field Friday night at Cayuga, he'll have to hope his team, winners of three straight, can tackle well.
