LOCAL SPORTS IN BRIEF
      FOOTBALL Freshmen, JV beat Hallsville Both the freshmen and junior varsity football teams at Kilgore High School scored wins over Hallsville on Thursday night here at R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium. The JV, coached by Jay Dean, won the nightcap, taking a 12-7 victory. Coach Dean said the defense played well, led by Willie Lawler and Chris Williams.

      The Southwestern Junior College Football Confernce — Texas' junior college football conference that prides itself as maybe the toughest JUCO football conference in the country — went 5-3 last weekend in games against the Kansas-based Jayhawk Conference.

      School hooks up with Hallsville High School in any sport, it's a district game. The Longview-area school, only about 20 minutes away if that, is almost always a district foe for Kilgore, but not this year.

Troup visits Cards for home opener
      Friday night will be the firstever home game for Jerry Baker as head coach of the Sabine High School Cardinals. He's hoping Troup isn't in sync when the Tigers come to James Bamberg Stadium for the 7:30 p.m. kickoff. Troup, which was a bit down last season, is normally an East Texas Class 2A power, and proved to Baker last week that they could be good again in 2008.

"We're not into moral victories around here," Robinson said Wednesday. "We just made way too many mistakes. You can't turn it over four times and expect to win.

      Don't tell Leverett's Chapel head football coach Matt Everett that his team blew by Dallas Academy in the 2008 opener last week. Everett, who watched as his Lions dismantled DA, 69-38, found a few bad things in the overwhelming victory.

After beating Harleton, WR takes aim at Gorman
      Nobody with the West Rusk High School football program is overconfident after shutting out Harleton last week, or overlooking T.K. Gorman, coach John Frazier said Tuesday. Frazier's Raiders (1-0) opened the season last Thursday with a 20- 0 blanking of Dennis Alexander's Harleton team, got an extra day off and visits Gorman in Tyler on Friday night, a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
