ARLINGTON (AP) — Texas fill-in starter Dustin Nippert got to be part of a few rarities Wednesday. Nippert pitched seven innings to win as a starter for the first time in nearly three years, and the Rangers beat the Seattle Mariners for only their third 1-0 victory in 15 seasons at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. Courtesy photo from KHS The Kilgore High School freshmen team (above, with coach Cassie Newell) won the tournament at Elysian Fields last weekend beating Beckville in two games, Grace Community in three and Carthage in three in the finals. The freshmen also defeated Marshall on Tuesday night. All three KHS volleyball teams will host Hallsville on Friday. Freshmen and varsity will both play at 4:30 p.m., and junior varsity will follow. The girls are gone next week — they visit Pine Tree High School on Tuesday, no longer a district game, and visit Lufkin next Friday. Both KHS and KC are in action this week — KHS visits Hallsville on Friday night, and KC hosts Tyler on Saturday. More ... Normally when Kilgore High School hooks up with Hallsville High School in any sport, it's a district game. The Longview-area school, only about 20 minutes away if that, is almost always a district foe for Kilgore, but not this year. More ... Friday night will be the firstever home game for Jerry Baker as head coach of the Sabine High School Cardinals. He's hoping Troup isn't in sync when the Tigers come to James Bamberg Stadium for the 7:30 p.m. kickoff. Troup, which was a bit down last season, is normally an East Texas Class 2A power, and proved to Baker last week that they could be good again in 2008. More ... Wow. Ty Robinson didn't win his coaching debut with Overton High School last week against Ore City, but he might have, he said, if not for a few things. Don't tell Leverett's Chapel head football coach Matt Everett that his team blew by Dallas Academy in the 2008 opener last week. Everett, who watched as his Lions dismantled DA, 69-38, found a few bad things in the overwhelming victory. More ... Nobody with the West Rusk High School football program is overconfident after shutting out Harleton last week, or overlooking T.K. Gorman, coach John Frazier said Tuesday. Frazier's Raiders (1-0) opened the season last Thursday with a 20- 0 blanking of Dennis Alexander's Harleton team, got an extra day off and visits Gorman in Tyler on Friday night, a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
