LC smashes Dallas Academy

By REV. EDWIN FINDLEY Special to the News Herald

LEVERETT'S CHAPEL — A 31-point win — not bad at all for the season-opener.

Leverett's Chapel's Lions, beginning another season of six-man football, beat the Dallas Academy Bulldogs 69-38 Friday night here in the 2008 home opener.

"OK performance," head coach Matt Everett graded after the game. "A lot of things we need to work on, some we need to do better."

The Lions rolled up those 69 points with total of 431 yards on the night and held the Bulldogs to 38 points and 311 total yards.

"It was good for us to get a full game in," Everett said. "I would liked it to have been over at half time."

In Texas six-man football, if at the half or any time after a team has 45 more points than their opponent, the game is over, a "mercy rule" similar to the 10-run rule in baseball.

The coach complimented Trevor Dean for "a heck of a night." Dean rushed for 144 yards and had 100 yards passing for a total of 244. He accounted for 27 points, scoring four touchdowns, running in one extra point and kicking another.

Center Kyle Youngblood also scored three touchdowns on the night. He had 40 yards rushing and 73 passing.

"We have a lot to build on," Everett said, with a smile.

Quarterback Daniel Still throw threw four touchdown passes and went 9-of-18 in the game. Tony Chavez had 122 rushing yards. He scored one touchdown and ran in one extra point.

Taylor Jordan had 70 yards on the night — 55 rushing, 15 passing. He scored in the second quarter on a 3-yard run and also added a extra point during the first quarter.

Chas Maxwell only had 27 yards rushing on the night, but he made then count. He scored one TD in the fourth quarter. He also ran in an extra point in the first quarter.

Within the 1:10 of the game, the Lions marched 61 yards in three plays, as Dean received a 47-yard pass from Still. The extra point failed.

The Bulldogs didn't let any grass grow under their feet. They came right back in two plays and John Cason scored on a 32-yard run, finishing a two-play drive of 34 yards to tie the score at 6-6 (their extra point also failed).

On the very next drive Dean capped a three-play 36-yard drive by running in from the 8. He also ran in for the extra point to make the score 13-6 with 6:51 remaining in the first quarter.

Dallas Academy tied the score with 5:53 remaining as they marched back in three plays when Carson threw Jasper Lavoi a 55-yard pass. Preston Simmons converted the extra point to tie the game once again. This is as close as the Bulldogs would get to the Lions for the rest of the contest.

LC scored twice in the next five minutes. Youngblood finished a four-play drive, scoring on a 12-yard catch from Still. At the end of the quarter, the Lions scored again, and led the Bulldogs 27-13 at the end of the first.

LC would go on to score 21 points and hold the 'Dogs to no additional first-half points. At halftime, LC led 48-19.

In the second half, the defenses stood taller, as no one scored until the 2:37 mark of the third quarter. Chavez ran in from the 37, finishing a six-play, 45-yard drive for LC. Following another Dallas Academy score, the Lions would not be outdone, coming right back in six plays and getting points when Dean scored from 18 yards out. The extra point would fail, but at the end of the third quarter, LC had a 61-25 advantage.

LC's lone score during the fourth came when Chavez ran from the 8 and Dean's kick.

On Friday, LC is home again, hosting Joshua Christian for their second of four straight home games to begin the season. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
