BASEBALL

KBBA meeting Wednesday

The Kilgore Boys Baseball Association will hold its annual meeting next Wednesday, August 27 at 8 p.m. at the KBBA/ Harris Street park. The public is invited to attend.

FOOTBALL

Little league sign-ups next week

Registration for the 2008 Kilgore little league football season will be held Tuesday and Thursday (Aug. 26, 28) from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. and on Saturday, Aug. 30 from 8 a.m. to noon in front of the gym entrance at Maude Laird Middle School. Registration cost is $65

for football and $35 for cheerleaders (cash or money orders only). Boys and girls entering third through sixth grades are eligible.

Also, the league is looking for coaches and players interested in starting flag football for kindergarten through second grades (boys and girls co-ed).

Meet the Cardinals Monday

The Sabine High School football program and the school's athletic boosters will host the annual Meet-the-Cardinals night on Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the high school gym. Blue Bell Ice Cream will even be served.

The Cardinals have a new head coach this year — Jerry Baker — and were to scrimmage at Gladewater on Thursday night. The Cards open their 2008 season at Redwater next Friday, Aug. 29 at 7:30 p.m.

Football preview Thursday

The Kilgore News Herald's annual football preview will be a part of Thursday's edition. The preview will take a look at football programs at Kilgore High School, Kilgore College, Leverett's Chapel, Overton, Sabine and West Rusk, and some coverage of the upcoming college football and NFL seasons.

Kilgore High School and most all area high schools open their 2008 seasons on Friday night. The West Rusk Raiders, though, will open their season on Thursday night at Pine Tree High School in Longview at 7:30 against Harleton. TENNIS

KHS opened season Saturday

The Kilgore HIgh School tennis team opened its fall season on Saturday morning at home against Gladewater.

The Bulldogs, again coached by Jason Maroney, won the fall district championship last year. Kilgore is to play again at Center on Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m., and then will play in a tournament at Texas High in Texarkana next weekend.

VOLLEYBALL

Lady 'Dogs in weekend tourney

The Kilgore High School varsity volleyball team was playing at press time Saturday afternoon in a tournament at East Texas Baptist University in Marshall. See Kilgore's results from the tournament in Tuesday's sports section.

Also, the Lady 'Dogs are in action Tuesday night at West Rusk High School in New London beginning at 5 p.m. with freshmen. Kilgore's varsity will play in a tournament in Tyler next weekend.
