      Kilgore High School tennis players have been getting to see each other quite a bit lately. That's because head coach Jason Maroney, entering his third school year heading up the KHS tennis program, has been putting the players through summer junior league, practices and the ladder tournament in order to prepare for the upcoming fall season.

      The opening ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics were truly breathtaking, as broadcast on NBC Friday night, and when the U.S. Olympic Team came into Beijing's new National Stadium — known as "the Bird's Nest" because of its strange shape — Kilgore native Kenta Bell was representing East Texas.

Murray doing well in A's system

      While the sun was setting on the East Texas Pump Jacks' inaugural season, a new day was dawning for one of the organization's former players. Justin Murray, who nearly two weeks ago signed with the Oakland A's to become the first Jacks player to go pro, has made his professional debut in the A's system.

BUDDY UP WITH THE RANGERS AUG. 21
     File photo by Lester Murray The Kilgore College Rangers football program had a big hit last year with Buddy Day, allowing area youngsters to come out to R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium, get a hamburger and interact with the football team, even going through different football exercises and drills. Coach J.J. Eckert (above, standing) and the Rangers are hosting Buddy Day again this year on Thursday, Aug. 21, and are inviting area kids to come out to the stadium at 6:30 p.m., grab a grilled-out burger, and have some fun with the Rangers. KC opens the 2008 season here on Saturday, Aug. 30 against Fort Scott (Kan).
