KHS students now have more dual credit courses available

By LESTER MURRAY news2@kilgorenewsherald.com

Dual credit classes are becoming very popular with high school students throughout East Texas and with a new career academy starting on Aug. 25, Kilgore High School students are encouraged to get aboard.

Jody Clements, superintendent of Kilgore schools, said this program is set up to offer dual credit classes in career courses through Kilgore College and Texas State Technical College. "Students will now have the opportunity to get college credit courses for a variety of technical programs," said Clements. "Computer-aided drafting, welding, process technology, health science technology, fundamentals of photography, computer programming, logic and design, computer maintenance and repair and medical terminology are courses offered at KC. Computer-aided drafting, welding, computer programming, logic and design, computer maintenance and repair, fundamentals of photography and medical terminology are being offered through TSTC."

Students interested in any of those classes will register with KC or TSTC before Aug. 25 when the classes will begin, said Clements. "KHS students can count any of these courses as an elective and all courses are being offered in the evenings," said Clements.

Students who live in the Kilgore College taxing district will pay $25 per credit hour; if the class includes a lab, there will be a $25 lab fee. "Students from outside KC's taxing district will have to pay $50 per credit hour and the lab fee of $25," said Clements.

Clements said for high school students taking classes offered by TSTC there is no cost at all in any district and no lab fees.

These classes are being offered at different campuses around the area but none of them are offered at KHS this year. Clements said KISD will consider hosting classes the next school year.

"Besides these career courses, KHS students do have the opportunity this semester to take a dual credit history course being taught at the KHS campus," said Clements. "We plan on expanding that one class to four classes for the next semester. All of those will be taught right here at KHS by Kilgore College professors."

Students interested in those classes can register through the KHS counselors.

The career courses will be taught at Hallsville High School, Longview High School, the Kilgore College Longview center, Pine Tree High School, New Diana High School and Tatum High School for this year.

Students who need more information can call David Galbraith or Sandy Teel at Kilgore College at (903) 983-8150 and (903) 983-8205 respectively. For TSTC classes, contact Michael Tivet at (903) 923-3230.
