      "The war is real," said the gentleman as I left the church building last Wednesday evening. His statement came after prayer for one of our soldiers who had been wounded in Afghanistan. During wartime, they are all ours, those men and women laying their lives on the line for our freedom. But, when it gets close to home, we pay attention.

      As someone with a reporting background, I have a standard, seasoned response to any fact I hear. It is to ask, "Says who?" Before my journalism training, I would believe any bit of unfounded gossip that came my way -- everything from "Don't flash your headlights at other cars because gang members will get you" to "Ryan Seacrest is just metrosexual.

      Kevin and Carol Brady of Kilgore are proud to announce the marriage of their daughter, Shannon Brady, to Tristan Roberts, son of Jerry and Lisa Roberts of Kilgore. The ceremony, officiated by Pastor Bill Engersoll, took place on July 12, 2008, at 4:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian of Kilgore.

      Jill Redmon, daughter of Richard and Loraine Redmon of Tatum, and David Lassen, Jr., son of Mrs. Jeanette Miller of Longview and Cindy and David Lassen, Sr. of Longview, are pleased to announce their engagement. Miss Redmon, a resident of Dallas, graduated from Pine Tree High School in 1995 and Texas Tech University in May 2000.

      Brent and Candy Gleghorn of Kilgore are proud to announce the engagement of their daughter, Lauren Gleghorn of Tyler, to Clayton Swetnam, son of Jerry and Joy Swetnam of Kilgore. It was all red, white and blue at the Kilgore Senior Citizens
      The Kilgore Senior Citizens met Wednesday, July 9, in the Lions Building at 307 Rusk Street. Ray Drost led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and Roy Tucker gave the opening prayer. Treva Wilcox presented a program, singing such spiritual songs as, "Everybody Will Be Happy Over There," "The Old Rugged Cross," "Standing On The Promises," and others.
