How one group of ladies conjure memories of yesteryear every week
Each Tuesday at lunchtime, under the shade of an enormous pecan tree many ladies from the community gather to share in what they say the Lord has blessed them with. Martha Toliver, evangelist, met this tuesday on Miles Street with 13 of her "sisters." "This week we're frying fish and playing bingo," Toliver said. But, fun follows behind the real purpose of the gathering - Bible study and the word of the Lord, "The lord blesses us with different people and different activities on different days," Toliver said. "But, we always have a good time." Toliver said each lady may bring a dish or the group takes up a collection for the days lunch. This Tuesday the group ate fish, all caught by Martha Williams and her family. Mary Hendrix, 99, is called the group's blessing. "She gives us inspiration to keep on," Toliver said. Hendrix will celebrate her 100th birthday in March. Although she cannot make every meeting, she makes it as often as possible. "I just love coming out and hearing the work of our Lord," Hendrix said. "As long as he keeps blessing me, I'll keep coming and praising."
